There is a growing awareness of the menace of soil erosion amongst various research organizations, agricultural planners and development agencies in Latin America (Conservation Foundation, FAO, 1954a,b,c; Pan American Congress, 1966; Watters, 1971) A survey conducted by the Conservation Foundation, FAO(1954a,b,c) produced an initial map depicting the magnitude of the erosion problem in various contries of Latin America. Any attempt to produce a generalized map can only result in a general guidelines because ofthe diversity of soil and climatic conditions in the region. For instance, rainfall varies from almost nothing in the coastal region of Peru to 5000 mm per year in various regions in the Amazon basin. Because of the rugged terrain and high climatic erosivity, vast areas of highlands in Equador, Colombia, and in the Andes have been either destroyed on seriously damaged by erosion (plates 28,29 and 30). There is little basic research information available on runoff and erosion in Latin America, and hence planning for erosion control is faced with lack od adequate information. A brief review of the available information for some regions is presented below. |
